2014 promises to be quite a busy year. I have a some interesting projects already underway with the possibility of others in the pipeline. One commission which I have been working on for a number months is a memorial sculpture for the Naval Service which will be installed at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. Due for completion in June this year, the sculpture will comprise of 13 giant sails of coloured glass which will reflect coloured shadows onto a white granite terrace. The colours of the 3m tall glass panels depict the 5 oceans around the world and the shapes of the sails mean that the shadows create the outline of a battlship on the floor. At one end of the the terrace stands a solitary figure, a sailor, head bowed and facing the setting sun. The figure is to be carved in Klikenny limestone and will stand larger than life at 2m tall. The stone arrived at my workshop yesterday and I will begin carving work in the next few days. Watch this space …
