Soroptimist Memorial installed

The Soroptimist Memorial that I have been working on over the last year or so was finally installed at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire last week. It celebrates the wonderful work of Soroptimist International Great Britain and Ireland.

The memorial features a cylindrical carved stone plinth with women from all over the world joining arms and holding hands. The women are young, old, little and large and their dress indicates that they are from countries far and wide, displaying the diversity of the Soroptimist organisation. One of the key goals of the Soroptimists is to  transform the lives and status of women and girls through education, empowerment and enabling opportunities.

The Soroptimist memorial also includes a stunning glass sculpture in the shape of the familiar Soroptimist “S”. The glass is constructed using 88 circular layers of blue glass, each individual cut to shape and textured to create an eye catching ripple effect that catches the eye of the viewer from a distance. Many thanks go to https://protoglassstudios.com/ for their help with the glass sculpture.

The Soroptimist memorial sits in a large circular garden in the shadow of the central Armed Forces Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum.
