Figurative sculpture beginning to take shape.
Work on the 4.5m long relief carving for Sheffield is well and truly underway. The Woodkirk Sandstone figurative sculpture is a new public art work for an industrial area of the city close to the steel works and the old railway sidings. The piece highlights the camaraderie between the close knit workmen as they make their way home from work.
As you can see from the images, the figures are blocked out to a depth of around 30mm before the detail can be added. As the sculpture is constructed from 6 separate pieces, extra care needs to be taken over the joints which are vulnerable. The sculpture will be ready around the middle of June and will be set into a wall around a new BMW building in the Brightside area of the City.
