I was down at Staunton Harold in Leicestershire last week and was happy to see that one of the 1st carvings that I ever made is still going strong. I made it when I was at Loughborough Art College in 1994 and it formed part of my degree show. It was then bought by the owner of the Ferrers Centre for Arts and Crafts and put on display in the Courtyard of the Craft Centre where it stayed for over 10 years. Recently it was moved to the entrance to nearby Lion Court, Staunton Harold Hall where it is today. When I made it, I remember polishing it to within an inch of its life, fortunately, that has faded now the Ancaster Limestone drapes look far better for it. Also still on display in the Courtyard at the Craft Centre are a sculpture called “Gust” which was also part of my degree show and a small slate sundial. The sundial is for sale, it is accurate and the latin translation is “I count only the sunny hours”
